Cookie Exchange & Giving Tree Get Together

Thanks for coming everyone!  It was great to get together, with good food, friends, and laughs.  Always a bonus to do a service project quilt!  Thanks for all the hard work from everyone to put this together. Merry Christmas!

Come unto Christ

This is the video Sister Jennings wanted to share with us during class. Enjoy!

A tribute to our Savior Jesus Christ and all that He means to us. The way to everlasting happiness almost seems so distant and impossible for us to grasp especially through all of our life's so many challenges. But, little do we know how much he truly loves. It is not until we are able to look behind us and to see all that He's actually done for us that the true meaning of why His presence was so important for us to have here on earth.

Sewing Stockings for Soldiers

We have the opportunity to help the community in making 100 Christmas Stockings for the Forgotten Soldiers Organization.  They will be stuffing Christmas Cards inside them.  It is a last minute service crunch, as they need them by this Thursday.  If you're willing and able, we'd love some help.  If you need any material, please let me know.

We will be meeting at Candi's home on Monday, November 29th, at 2:30 p.m. if you'd like to work together in a group, or you can do it on your own and get it to me by Thursday.

The size specs are:
The stockings are going to be 9 3/4 " tall by 5 1/2" wide at top and 8 1/4 " wide on the foot, give or take some. These dimensions are the size before sewing them.

Let me know if you're able to help, and we'll look forward to your creations!
Happy Sewing!

Below is a sample of how to make a stocking.  It is just a suggestion...

Couch to 5K in January?

Couch to 5K on Thanksgiving Day was awesome!  Anyone have a suggestion for a 5K in January on a Saturday?

Shhh! We're collecting food for the Missionaries for Christmas!

If you'd like to help fill the Missionaries Pantry for Christmas, bring a non-perishable food item to the Ward Kitchen.  We're collecting them in a box right next to the kitchen door, under the counter.

It's a secret... so don't let them know!

Family Night in Bethlehem

Okay, for all of you who know Sister Patton... every year she tells everyone about a place down on Sample that does the City of Bethlehem that you don't want to miss.  I thought we'd post it out here for anyone who'd like to go.  It's a fantastic experience.  They have real animals, and soldiers that are on horseback.  It can be crowded, but is very worth it.  Great Family Night activity.

Going on Now... Invite someone to Family Night!

Friends and Family Home Evening Week, Nov 8-15.

Who can you invite to Family Night?

We want everyone to be involved this week:  Nov. 8 to Nov. 15th.
Let them feel the spirit in your home.

I just did it!  I went to workout this morning, and I invited a girl who likes to push me to do my best.  She happily said yes!  It will be so fun.  I wouldn't have thought of it otherwise... but this is the week to do some inviting!  Give it a try!  - Candi

The 21 Rules of This House

I heard about these today, and thought they would be a good reminder for my house... so I thought I'd pass them on to you too.  I think I'm going to do what Sister Angelos' mother would do... and post a few of them throughout the house too, on the mirrors in the bathroom, etc.   Goes along great with "The Proclamation to the world" in the hallway, as our family's words we live by.  - Candi

Friends and Family Home Evening Week, Nov 8-15.

Who can you invite to Family Night?

We want everyone to be involved this week:  Nov. 8 to Nov. 15th.

The goal is to invite others to Christ, and our tool is Family Home Evening.
The lesson can be on whatever you like.  It can be as formal or informal as needed.  The whole idea is for you to invite someone to feel the spirit in your home, and to get to know each other better.

Sign up sheets will be passed around this Sunday for a time that you will set a goal and invite a friend.
Invite a friend, a family, a neighbor.
We encourage you to invite the missionaries to come and participate if appropriate.

Family Home Evening Helps, including Charts, Pictures, Quotes, etc.

Next Thursday... Nov. 11, Fieldtrip to the Cannery!

Our next Relief Society Weekly Activity is going to be a fieldtrip to the Cannery in Davie, FL.  This picture below is of me with my next door neighbors on our trip last week.  We had so much fun, that they wanted to take pictures.  Her husband even said that she couldn't stop talking about it when she got home.

It was a great experience, and they were able to take home some food storage also.  Invite your neighbors!
Great prices, good friends, and good food.  :)

Remember, they take cash or check only.
An order form is on this blog on the left hand side under Useful Links.

"The Prophet Said to Plant a Garden, So that's what I'll do!"

These are the handouts that Lorraine gave at the Square Foot Gardening Weeknight activity that we had in September.  The main planting season for South Florida begins in October, then again in January.  You can click on the pages below, and they will be large enough to print and read.

“The Prophet Said to Plant a Garden,”
Children’s Songbook of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 237
Joyfully

1. The prophet said to plant a garden, so that’s what we’ll do.
For God has given rich brown soil, the rain and sunshine too.
And if we plant the seeds just right and tend them carefully,
Before we know, good things will grow to feed our family.

2. We’ll plant the seeds to fill our needs, then plant a few to spare,
And show we love our neighbors with the harvest that we share.
Oh, won’t you plant a garden, too, and share the many joys
A garden brings in health and love to happy girls and boys!

Family History Miracle

A few weeks ago our family went up the temple using our own family history names.  We only had a couple to do, and I was soon going to run out.  I said a prayer while I was in the temple that I would be able to find more from this particular family.  It had been so difficult to find any, and I really felt a great joy from doing our own family history names.  I didn't want it to end.

When we got home from our trip, I was very surprised to see an email from a stranger.  She said that she had seen an old picture that I had posted on the internet, and wanted to know if I was related to... guess who... the very same family that we had just gone to the temple for.

You could call it a coincidence, or you could call it a miracle.  I like to believe that there are no such things as coincidences.

It was a humbling and exciting experience for me, and in the course of a week in correspondence with this lady, I now have pages and pages of family names that I never had.  What a blessing!

Our Stake President inspired me to start on our family history.  I'm so glad I did.  I always thought this was something you did when you were retired, and had time on your hands.  I would have missed out on so many exciting experiences if I had done that.  The fire has been lit!

Come and join us THIS THURSDAY, and GET YOUR FIRE LIT, as we work on our family history together for our Mid-week activity!  7 to 9 p.m.

Sister Candi L.

2010 General Election Important Dates

“We believe that governments were instituted of God for the benefit of man; and that he holds men accountable for their acts in relation to them, both in making laws and administering them, for the good and safety of society. … such as will administer the law in equity and justice should be sought for and upheld by the voice of the people. …” (D&C 134:1, 3.)

Know the issues. Discover what is being discussed. See if there are other issues that ought to be included. Don’t consider just one point of view. Learn, consider, pray for guidance. Casting a vote is far more serious than many people realize.

Become active in politics. Do volunteer work at party headquarters. Contribute financially to a party and/or deserving candidates. Ask to be assigned to the team of a suitable candidate. Think of ways to get out the vote and work with your local level party leaders.
Help destroy the myth that “politics are dirty.” The fact is: politics are essential. The Lord has stressed that we ought to be concerned and involved in promoting good government. You simply have to realize that the political process is the way to attain that objective.
Remember you’ve got to do more than talk about politics. You’ve got to vote and act intelligently.
- D. James Cannon, New Era 1971

Service Project, Saturday, October 9th

We met our goal of 500 deodorants!
Great job!

The Stake Relief Society's original goal was to make 1000 kits, then they trimmed the size down for us to not be overwhelmed.  So, if you still have more deodorant you'd like to donate, we'd love to see it.  They are envisioning doing this service project again in the future... so any extras we have will not go to waste.

Thank you for all your help, and we will see you this Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. at the BR Chapel.

Bring a friend!

Time to Prepare for November 2, Voting Day

An apostle for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said today the United States Constitution is a singular document whose fundamental principles must be understood, valued and protected.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks made the remarks in his keynote address at the Constitution Day Celebration held in the Tabernacle on Temple Square. The event was presented by the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics and America’s Freedom Alliance.

Service Project, Saturday, October 9th

This is a great Service and Missionary Opportunity!
I thought I'd include an email that we sent out to our neighbors and school friends.  I've had a lot of good conversations about it already.  Our ward's goal is 500 Deodorants.  Another ward needed some help with toothbrushes, so I added that to my email too.  Get excited to get others involved in this project.

Goal:  500
Where we are now:  300

Sample Email that you could send:

Our family is helping our church to collect items for a Personal Hygiene Kit to donate to AVDA, a local woman's shelter, and we could use some help.

Have any extras around your house?
Have a dollar or two for a good cause?

THE GOAL:
500 Deodorants trial size or regular
1000 toothbrushes (individually wrapped)
500 toothpaste tubes (mini or regular)
by Saturday, October 9th, 2010.

You can find us at ________ on ________ Mornings, or the ___________ on Friday's.

Thanks in advance,
_______ and family

So now I am asking you all to have faith too and take that step out into your neighborhoods to get donations for this service project.  Also to contact your visiting teaching sisters who have not had an opportunity to participate in this activity which is a service to the sisters of the community.  It is such a worthy cause.

Any donations you get can be put into a tithing envelope with a tithing slip – you will need to put the donation on the “Other” line and be sure to put next to “Other” “RS Service Pjt” so the money will go into the right bucket and be available to pay for the deodorants that have been ordered. (through a discount website)

I am already going back out into the neighborhood to more neighbors and I am confident that with the Lords direction that we will find the donations we need.

I hope you are excited about taking on this wonderful opportunity and will help us out.

Thanks for all you do.  You are the BEST!

Love,
Sister Sandy S.
